Sometimes God Shouts
Recently, I read a short story called “When God Whispers”, which moved me to the point of tears. It was beautifully written and the message was not a whisper to me, it was more like a shout.
Events and ongoing occurrences in my life have led me to wonder whether God is shouting at me but I am not listening.
I know He is shouting but am I getting the right message or is it distorted because of all the distractions. As I write , it gets clearer. Ah I understand… he is removing those distractions so I can hear him clearer.
Being keen and discerning is not easy but it is essential to hearing God’s voice clearly. Initially it may not even look or sound like God and we may become tempted to just ignore his bidding. This is how I felt for sure, I did not want to hear… that message.
God in his omnipotence, knows what is best for us, it may not feel good, we may not understand what he is doing, but he knows the heart of us all and will do what is necessary to keep us from the un-necessary pitfalls. In some cases he even allows to fall into the pit often not literally, but what may seem bad initially always works out for our good.
Joseph was favoured, his father had made him a colourful coat because he loved him, this was one reason he was hated by his brothers, but when he shared his dream with his brothers, he was hated even more. Even his father rebuked him for sharing those two dreams. Sometimes you’re better off not sharing your blessings with anyone, because it stirs up envy and they begin to devise all kinds of things to destroy you. As the story goes, because of the hatred his brothers harboured towards him, he was eventually thrown into a pit and later sold as a slave. Joseph’s dreams did come true, he eventually became a highly respected ruler in Egypt, not without trials and temptation. He used his gift even while in prison and he realised his dream.
The bible does not mention Joseph complaining or wishing harm on those who had wronged him , instead he remained resourceful and made his gift available to his fellow prison mates. God used his gift to open doors, which led to his promotion.
As we go through our trials, let us be careful not to allow ourselves to become bitter and angry. Joseph was a true example and we can hold on to his experience, knowing that God is always supreme, he can stop anything and anyone. If he does not then there is a bigger purpose that we are unable to see at present. Instead of becoming overcome with feelings of grief and anger let us go to God, stay in His presence where we can abide, continually.
Psalm 91 refers to him as our refuge, our shelter, our fortress. The one who will hide us under his feathers, He who preserves us from every pestilence and the arrow which fly towards us by day and by night. He is faithful , and his faithful will be our shield. When we make Him, the Most High our dwelling,no harm, no evil, no disaster will come against us. He will command his angels to surround you and guard you in all of your ways. Because he loves us he will rescue us, he will protect us as we acknowledge his name and finally with long life he will satisfy us, and show him our salvation.
